ROAD WARRIOR WARS
Mad Max, made in 1979, and its sequels, Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome, were clairvoyant previews of the next fifty or so years. When these movies first came out, the world still seemed secure and settled. Now look around us. The USSR is no more. Other nations are fast destroying themselves as well - Yugoslavia and Iraq being two prime examples.
We are already fighting our road warrior wars for gasoline. And of course, like Max, we see ourselves as the policemen, going after the "bad guys." Actually, we just want to control the gasoline. We know that whoever controls it has the power. And we want the power.
In therapy, when we are about to undergo a radical change in personality and consciousness, leading to a greatly enhanced life style, many of us first try to control and maintain the status quo. We do this because our old and previously useful ego awareness has trouble trusting enough to allow new growth begin in our personality. This is typical of the healing process - the darkest hour is always just before the dawn.
Usually this fear constriction is quickly passed through, allowing for the new growth to begin. However, some individuals resist change. They continue to hold on to the old and refuse to answer the call to growth and renewed life. These are the walking dead, living in their dead past, too afraid to move into the future. Some even become presidents of the United States of America.
Sometimes the collective is also asked to undergo a radical change, leading to a renewed consciousness and life style. But if we all refuse to pass through our collective fear constriction - if we are too afraid to move on into our future - then we will come soon, all too soon, to live in the time of the second movie - Road Warrior. If this happens, we will have lost our way, and it will be only a matter of time before we are all gone. And later, when visitors from other stars come to visit, they will be met by only a deadly silence hanging sadly over a civilization that ended in insanity and violence.
Now is a time of profound spiritual crisis. So far, we have been afraid to accept the change that Spirit is asking of us. So far, we have failed to grow. However, if we do finally overcome our fear and our greed and begin to follow Spirit, all will be well. If we can just trust ourselves to Spirit, we will continue to grow in love and wisdom. And someday we will even venture out to the stars ourselves.
